4 URL Parameters for which your Blog might suffer penalty from Google

The ever changing Webmaster Tools that is getting newer features day by day has progressed a lot and this all has led to a great development of Google. The age old URL features which must be known to everyone are still an undisclosed matter to some.

The novice bloggers even less than one month old to blogging must at some point of their newly started career have come across Google Webmaster Tools and we all expect that they might be well versed with it.

If you still don’t have much idea about the Google Webmaster Tools here we are to guide you. Let’s have a look at what the Google Webmaster Tools actually are and what do they do for us.

Google provides us certain tools to track our blogs in the Google SERPS. These tools provided to us which help us to track our blog in the Google SERPS are known as Google Webmaster Tools. Lots of features including URL Parameters, index status, number of backlinks of a blog, number of queries a blog gets etc. all come under GWT.

Now that you know what Google Webmaster Tools are you might be thinking what URL parameters we are talking about. In layman’s language the additional words and characters one sees in a URL excluding the normal post title words are the URL parameters.

For your convenience we hereby provide you an example. Have a look at the URL below

 http://abc.com/ post-title/?replytocom=545

Here in this URL replytocom is a Parameter and it is the very same thing we have been discussing about.

Now let’s have a look at how does the Parameter Function. These parameters function in lot many ways but our primary motive will be to stop Google from indexing URLs with Parameters in them. The 4 major Parameters that you need to take care of and setup are as follows:

The 4 URL parameters are:

replytocom
utm_source
utm_medium
utm_campaign

The replytocom Parameter gets created whenever one replies to a comment on your blog. The javascript can’t be on for Google bots so no box appears when they get to the reply button. This leads to the bot getting redirected to the same page with the URL being changed. All this procedure leads to you getting a duplicate content even when you haven’t copied anything.

All three utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign mostly come together and the reason behind them is same as of the replytocom Parameter. These parameters get a ? before them in the end. All these 3 utms also get created when you comment on a blog that has Commentluv enabled or when  the feed of your blog is indexed by the Google bots.

Let’s now discuss the need to setup the aforementioned parameters:

We all know that Google always penalizes the sites and blogs with duplicate content and all the above mentioned URLs make a copy of the original content and this leads to Google penalizing your site.

How to setup these 4 URL Parameters?
Login to your concerned account and reach the Google Webmaster Tools.
Under the Crawl Section you will find URL Parameters. Click on it

Click on the Add parameter button and make the settings similar to the one’s mentioned here in this image

Setup all the 4 Parameters one by one in similar fashion. The entire process will consume at most 20 minutes – 5 minutes each. When all the four Parameters have been set up the screen will look something like .
So now that you know what to do and how to do, do it fast. Also we would like to add that everyday newer and newer parameters are added which you may see in the long run. For now you are secure against these 4 URL parameters.
